Study Guide for Mid-Term Exam

In the exam on Tuesday, October 11 you will be asked to

1)  identify and/or define 10 items selected from terms, concepts, characters, quotes, etc. from the reading and class notes so far this semester.  We have gone over those in class.

2) You will also be asked to write three "mini" essays (probably around a page or so long) in which you construct a thesis and present an argument (with evidence from the texts) to answer/respond to one of the questions/topics below.

    a.  What seems to be Plato's concept of education as it's worked out in "The Allegory of the Cave"? 

    b.  For Freud, is "civilization" more helpful or harmful for our pyschic health? 

    c.   Construct an argument *in favor* of the narrator's philosophical/moral point of view (essentially a "carpe diem" perspective) in Marvell's "To His Coy Mistress."

    d.   Construct an argument *in opposition* to
the narrator's philosophical/moral point of view (essentially a "carpe diem" perspective) in Marvell's "To His Coy Mistress."

    e.   What is the film's representation of technology in Forbidden Planet?   Is it primarily a positive or negative view?

    f.   Is The Tempest more of a story of revenge or one of romance?   Does anger or does love tend  to predominate? 

    g.   Is Hawthorne's view of religion primarily a positive or a negative one in "Young Goodman Brown"?

    h.  Elaborate on the idea that Alice Walker's "Everyday Use" presents a complex view of the concept of "cultural heritage."
