This course is designed to examine literary responses (focusing
particularly on the responses of American writers) to the Spanish Civil
War (SCW). As a prelude to World War II, the SCW was an ideological
war that has come to be known as "the poet's war." The goal of this
course is to think through why this "civil war" became such an important
"international war" and why the SCW has continued to haunt the imagination
of so many writers. We will look closely at the work of Ernest Hemingway,
a writer for whom Spain was central to his creative life, but we will
also examine the work of many more lesser-known writers and ask why the
SCW has continued to live in the minds of several generations of American
writers.
