The Drake Well Foundation is sponsoring a symposium on the history of the oil industry March 26-29, 2003, in Shreveport, LA. Co-sponsors include the History of Geology Division, Geological Society of America; and the History of Earth Science Society.

An excellent schedule of events is set for our meeting. Below is a brief summary; see the link above for more details. Our Friday evening speaker is Dr. Diana Olien, author and co-author of several oil history books and numerous articles. Her books include: Oil in Texas-The Gusher Age 1895-1945 (2002); Oil and Ideology--The Cultural Creation of the American Petroleum Industry (2000); Easy Money--Oil Promoters and Investors in the Jazz Age (1990); Life in the Oil Fields (1986).

visit sites around Caddo-Pine Island Field, LA
Fish fry at Louisiana State Oil and Gas Museum

March 27 (Thursday)

lunch at hotel
Field trip to East Texas Field at 12:30
Visit field sites and East Texas Oil Museum
Texas Bar-B-Q in Kilgore area

March 28 (Friday)
continental breakfast at hotel 7:30-8:30 AM
talks begin at 8:30 AM in hotel meeting room

March 29 (Saturday)

trip to Smackover Field, AR, leaving at 8:10 AM
arrive in area, visit old earthen tank farms
go to Arkansas Museum of Natural Resources (Smackover)
eat box lunches, visit museum
visit field sites
leave for Shreveport about 4 PM
return to Shreveport no later than 6:30 PM
