MLK Day Celebration

"If a man hasn't discovered something that he will die for, he isn't fit to live."
~Martin Luther King Jr.

Martin Luther King was a man who inspired many and still continutes to do so; I walked away from the MLK Day Celebration feeling very much inspired.  Each speaker during the program acknowledged King's impact with many thought provoking words.  KTBS News anchor, Gwen Campbell spoke of her experiences as a black woman and shared how people who knew King have personally touched her life.  She stressed the importance of the holiday.  I tend to forget the commemorative holiday and the incredible impact that King had on the lives of many.
The Heavenly Touch singers were amazing.  The reason the entire program was uplifting was largely due to their music.  I am always in awe of people who can use their voices in such beautiful and powerful ways.
Ron Anderson, the director of LightHouse, spoke of remembrance, reflection, and
response to King.  Like Anderson, I also do not understand how people can be indifferent to the decisions that children and teens make today.  His thoughts impelled me to realize the difference that a small amount of love and guidance can make.  King sought to change peoples' hate and indifference towards blacks into acknowledgment of their
accomplishments and respect for their lives.  He went about doing this in a caring and loving manner.  I respect Anderson and those like him who are actively making a difference in today's society.  Though much progress has been made since King's death, there is still much work to be done.  Today, King's words and dreams are not only still remembered, but also applicable.

"The burden of being black is that you have to be superior to be equal.  But the glory of it is that once you have achieved you have achieved indeed!"
~Jesse Jackson
