1) Any of the suggestions for using SurveyWiz will also work with WWW Survey Assistant (SA). However, SA can incorporate more complex procedures. For example, if students are designing a complex survey instrument involving skip patterns or online calculation of variables (e.g., after a series of questions, the computer calculates a total for the surveyor to see and use), SA would be more useful.
2) To utilize some of the skip features, have students take the role of a pollster. Have them outline a series of questions that would involve skip patterns for maximum benefit. For example, if an early qeustion is "Did you vote in the last Presidental election?", this could lead to several different branches of questions. If the response is "No", then there's one set of questions to ask, but if the response is "Yes", there is a different set of questions to ask. This forces students to think about potential responses and how to deal with them. Also, can the same basic questionnaire be programmed in SA and then used by either a telephone interviewer OR independently by a respondent? What differences would their need to be?
