#7 Adv. Studio II – Entry 09 Bruce has a son. Or a stepson. This son is in a band. This band is called The Terms. People like this band and they did something with MTV. Bruce likes his son and his band. Bruce likes my work (eh, eh?). So Bruce asked me to make a piece for his son's band. It was a successful piece, so I am going to use it and write about it. Anyway yes, so Bruce's son is in a band called The Terms, formerly known as The Sidewalks. Either way, they seem to be doing pretty well for themselves and they have a lot going on, which is good. Bruce is very supportive of his son's band and slightly crazy, so he asked me to make a 22"x22" piece for the side of his van. So he gives me the Terms DVD which I used to scan in the cover so that I would have something to work with. What I did from that point was pretty standard, but I had not done one quite like it in a little while, so it was certainly some good practice. Anyway on the cover of the DVD there are five band members, none of which I know personally, and they are all wearing black and the image is greyscale anyway. The style I decided to go with is not uncommon, but that is true because the style has been proven to work well and is fairly popular (see Weezer). I traced their basic figure and hair in all black, and I cut out where there skin was (faces, hands, whatever) from the black so it ended up being white (or technically whatever color you put it over). A good portion of the work was fairly simple. I did not have any real trouble getting their clothes done, because it was fairly solid. The hair of some of them gave me a bit of trouble, and I kind of changed it in a few places because it was becoming hard to differentiate what was dark hair and what was shadow (which can be one of the problems using a dark greyscale like this one was). Other than the hair, the only thing that really gave me any more trouble was cutting their hands out of the black. Sometimes my hands looks a little rounded and bulky, but in the end these came out quite well. We (Bruce and I) experimented with a few other things, like drawing in their eyes, or their eyebrows, or their eyes and their eyebrows. None of these really worked out very well and, to me at least, did not look very good at all. Sara agreed with me. Bruce even trie have me do their noses. This was a bad idea from the start. We tried it and it was just completely hideous. In the end just going with the clothes and the hairs was the right choice to make. It looked good and looked even better printed out on vinyl. Bruce got a magnet version which looks pretty damn good on the car. Not the best because it is two 13" prints, but it is certainly decent. The other on the other side of his car is straight vinyl and Bruce put it on himself. Bruce... man... Good year. |
